Cyberlink Power DVD Ultra Version 8.0

Looking for software to play Blu-Ray discs in your PC, Cyberlink has one of the best options available right now with the Power DVD Ultra Version 8.0. Currently it's a fan boy favorite and the software is needed for most low cost Blu-Ray player purchases, where playback software is not included.

What catches my eye about the Cyberlink Power DVD Ultra is the fact that it includes modes to play high quality DVD's on low system spec PC's. So you can take the sofwtware with you and not just have it reserved for the high end PC. This becomes appealing software for cheap notebooks, which may be lacking on processing power, which can double as a media center for traveling.

This Week on DVD: Australia, ER, Ace Ventura, Jr.

FEATURE FILMS

Pick of the Week: Australia

Starring: Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman

Here’s the epic that everybody missed, featuring arguably Australia’s two biggest starts. Didn’t seem to matter, however, as middling reviews and general malaise led it to bargain theaters weeks after it hit the big houses. Why was this? Probably because romance is dead in Hollywood. Nobody likes big sweeping gestures of love, preferring intimate stories of “realism” or silly chick flicks where love is some sort of prize. Nobody seems to consider love that grand anymore and therefore stories where it’s as big as an entire country fall flat. If you still long for the sweeping romance of yore, you can buy this DVD.

Your question confuses me somewhat. There isn't much new re DVD players (although Toshiba offer players with advanced edge enhancement (called XDE) that offer some benefit .. at a price. The next generation disk players support an HD alternative to DVD called Blu-ray. While you can get an upscaling DVD player (e.g. from Phillips, Sony, Samsung, Toshiba) you may wish to consider Blu-ray.

Blu-ray players play DVD (but upscale them to pseudo high definition (HD=720p or more)), but are mainly intended to play Blu-ray disks … a 1080p HD video disk with "better than DVD" audio. While you can buy a DVD player, Blu-ray players have fallen enough in price that it makes sense to consider one even if you intend to play mainly DVDs.

The Blu-ray format is more expensive than DVD, and only makes sense if you have an HD display (i.e. HDTV or HD projector). It also really needs a good surround audio system to take advantage of the HD audio.

Blu-ray players are region coded, so a player sold in India will not play US or UK region coded disks. Not all disks are region locked though.

There are many different players (and more all the time). The most flexible require an Internet connection to enable extra features (like on-line access to updates, extra disk features and streaming video).

Some players — like the PS3 — not only play disks, but also games and act as media centres. Some accept USB thumb drives for access to music, photos and video.

DVD upscaling ability varies, so if you have or will play lots of DVDs take this into account when choosing.

I suggest you do some reading and select based on what models are available in India (warranty and region coding issues).
